WORDS WITH A CLEAR ORIGIN

Meet LettersFinder.

A small, independent tool for the pleasure of finding the right word.

What the finder does

Our filters match letters and positions against a static English word list. The page arrives with real word results already in its HTML. The full list for your chosen length then loads in your browser, where filtering takes place. Your clues are not sent to a search API.

The word list

We use word-list 4.1.0, a freely available English word list sourced from the public atebits/Words collection. We keep lowercase A–Z entries and remove duplicates. The package filters a set of offensive words; this is not a promise that every entry suits every audience.

These are actual counts in this build. They include inflections and uncommon words and are not official Wordle, Scrabble or crossword answer counts. Read the word-list license and source notices.

Meanings and common words

Selected familiar words have original editorial definitions and examples. Other meanings come from the adambom JSON edition of Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary. The historical text may use dated terminology and does not cover every modern word or inflection. We shorten long entries for readability and label that source in the word details. Read the definition dataset license.

“Everyday” and “Common first” use a manually selected list of familiar words, not a measured frequency corpus. Common first starts with our hand-picked everyday examples, then the rest of the familiar selection; uncommon matches remain available afterward. They are helpful browsing choices, not an estimate of the probability of a hidden answer. If a meaning is unavailable, we say so and link to a modern dictionary rather than generating a definition.

Tile scores and clue feedback

Letter counts let you require exactly, at least, or at most a chosen number of copies. Counts refer to the whole word, including letters already fixed in a position. They combine with other clues instead of replacing them.

Scores use standard English tile values. They exclude board bonuses and do not subtract points for blank tiles. Guess feedback first accounts for letters in the correct position, then allocates remaining copies to letters in other positions. This prevents a duplicate letter from being counted more often than it appears in a candidate.

Independent by design

LettersFinder is not affiliated with or endorsed by the owners of Wordle, Scrabble or any other game. Games can use different word lists, and their own rules decide which words are accepted.
